S'G' or S.G. stock question

I have a very nice type II high wood stock that has a very faint cartouche in the middle of the butt stock on the right side. It is a crossed cannon with a box right next to it towards the butt like that of an Irwin Pedersen or S'G' but it has "TRIMBLE TN" in the sling well. I originally thought it to be a S.G. but after looking at it closer the box is not off set like that of other S.G. cartouches I have seen. The stock is very nice but unfortunately, the cartouche is hard to make out. I have tried to take pictures but they just don't show any details. Could I have an oddity??? TIA

SG stock the SG is horizontal. S'G' stock the S'G' is vertical. This when looking at the stock from th right side as you hold the rifle parallel to the ground. That is the easiest way to tell.

I could see SG sending stocks to S'G'.
They were both the same division..... just different locations, and not far away from each other at that.
Stranger things have been seen.
Would make a good question for Marty at the Club.

Thanks guys. I just wish I could see what is in the box. It is there but faint. It looks as though the letters are verticle if the stock were standing on it's butt plate. I don't know, CRAP!!!

I just stripped the old finish off a Type III CMP Rock Ola stock. You had to be superman to see the boxed RMC with CC below. After using a 2 part wood bleach solution the markings came out very nicely. You can now see them from any angle.
I've have one more oil coat to put on it then I'll post some pictures.

Charlie, after looking at it I think it has been sanded. Albeit, not much, but sanded nonetheless. There was a great deal of paint and numbers like your type III Rock-Ola stock you posted. At some point it got stripped but there is evidence of different colored paints in the pores of the wood.

The stock I pictured was a Korean returned RMC Type I Hi-wood, not the Type III I'm working on.
I have another coat of oil to apply to my CMP RMC Type III stock.
I'll post pictures of the Type III RMC and some others when finished.
Planning to put the RMC Type III up for auction along with a Type III WRA/GHD, 2 Inland Type III and 1 Stan Pro that's a lo-wood marked S-HB.

Try that wood bleach on a stripped stock. It won't harm any markings, it will really enhance them. Even if you color the wood it still naturally darkens in less than a year.

When Stripping a stock with paint on it. You've got to use a HOT stripper.
ZAR Paint and Varnish stripper is the best I've found, it's a semi-paste. After stripping, to get the last of the paint from the wood pores.....Soak another coat on the entire stock and wrap air tight with heavy plastic. Leave overnight, then rinse with a hard water spray from the hose using a stiff toothbrush to pull the last of the paint from the pores. That paint in the pores is loose after stripping but it takes spraying with the water to get it pulled out. Then towel dry and stand up straight so it won't warp. I usually clamp my stocks to a jig I made while their drying..... just in case.

You'll be amazed at how much better markings can be seen.
Below are pictures of a Underwood stock, I picked up from my good buddy Charles in Bhama. We both looked it over closely and thought the CC was missing. We both thought there were 2 wood knots, but the lower one ended up being the CC after treating it. I could even see the rebound of the UEF over GHD stamping. Before you could barely makeout the circled P proof on the bottom of the grip. These AFTER pics were taken with my old Video camera, while the girls were off with the digital camera. Sorry there so small.
I need fresh pics of all my carbines.
I'm sure there are plenty of other methods, but I've had good results this way, with no sanding...just buffing down with dry felt pads.

Charlie, I'm going to try your advice when I get back into town this weekend. I'm leaving for a much needed little get away but when I return....look out! Three of us have looked the stampings over and we all feel it is a S'G' in the box but the "TRIMBLE TN" in the sling well is throwing us off.

I think sanding a stock should be punishable by hanging!!! :madsmile:
