My 2A rear sight protector is loose and the screw at the base of the stock for the protector is loose and will not tighten. Could someone provide me with instructions on safely removing the lower stock to repair the loose rear sight protector? Thanks in advance for all help.
Once you've removed the nosecap, band, handguard (front, at least) and trigger guard, there's also the barrel tensioning band that's retained by the other screw on the underside of the forearm in addition to the sight protector screw. (You almost certainly knew all that, but just making sure we're on the same page...)
If the fore stock doesn't fall off on it's own, which is fairly common do the following:
The main thing when going to remove the wood is to NOT pry down on the front of the fore end. If it's tight, gently bump the top of the rear of the stock on either side a little, starting w/ the heel of your hand. If it doesn't move use a light tapping w/ a rubber faced hammer on each side again, but lightly! Make sure when it does start to go that the whole works moves evenly- not too much at the rear or the front.
Take your time, and double check every thing if it doesn't want to cooperate-sometimes old oil has turned to varnish, or rust may lock the metal and wood bits together.

I was able to get the fore stock off, thanks. The front sight protector seems different from the #1 MK III diagrams. It looks like the screw comes up from the bottom? There was no nut to hold the screw at the top? I will have to take another look at it to see if the screw is broken. The screw is not broken, all that is present was a regular looking screw from the bottom and the rear sight protector. Was there some special nut used on the 2A's. This rifle is baffling me as it is missing at least three parts?
One side screw (from the left side) and one on the bottom that goes into a inletted plate. When replacing the fore stock don't forget the spring loaded plunger must go in it's recess at the front end BEFORE you snug the wood onto the barreled action. It's really annoying to find it loose just as you're installing the nose cap!
Do you mean the one that goes into the plate that slides on the barrel?

The Nosecap bottom screw goes up into a T shaped nut in the forend.
The rear sight protector has a screw that goes down into a slotted barrel shaped nut.
