I am just getting into Mausers and am primarily interested in WW2 German issue rifles. I would like a good reference book. I was going to purchase Law's Backbone of the Wehrmacht but have heard some talk there were a lot of inaccuracies in it. Is this true and if so is there a better choice or choices. I don't mind spending the money because if good information keeps you from getting burned the books can pay for themselves in one transaction.
BBOTW does have flaws, but it's pretty much the only book about 98ks that's widely available.
it's inaccurate on production numbers for a lot of the rifles and a couple of faked/not-what-they-seem rifles made it into the book

Thanks for the feedback, more than one reference is probably the best choice for me.
Robert Balls' book Mauser Military rifles of the world 4th edition is available on Amazon. It has a lot of information on all country mausers.
As a K98k collector, in my opinion, this book and the two that will follow will be a huge step forward to BBOTW, which was written 1996 ....

See if you can find a copy of David M. Armstrong's Pocket Book of the Kar98k. He listed more than 360 known variants on the basic 98k platform, all arranged in check-list form so that you know what was actually made, by whom, when and with what mods and inspectors' stamps.
EXCELLENT pocket reference. Published in Arlington, Virginia, about 1981 and WORTH looking hard to find.
I have the KRIEGSMODELL book. It is the best most up to date book out there now. Although it's mostly about late models, it has a lot on the early models too. I don't think you can go wrong by getting it. However war time and late models is what I'm most interested in. So it was like it was written just to answer my questions. As I said GREAT BOOK.
