I'm in the process of rebuilding a 1903 Springfield; and need a cutoff. Searching the net I came up with a site offering type(s) 4, 5, and 6 (assuming there are others in the sequence(?). Is there somewhere that will provide more information about the cutoff to select.

Springfield cut-offs had letters with serifs. Around 1915 they changed to block lettering. Large overlap here. Parkerizing started around 1918.
If you can post a pic of your rifle(close-up of the receiver finish), I, or someone else, might have one to match.
I assume by using the "Type" designation, you are referring to those mentioned in Joe Poyer's book on the M1903? These are Poyer's invention and the term "Types" had no basis in fact. Poyer admits it. Mike is correct that the change came somewhere in the WWI period. I have two original 1915 M1903s -one has a serifed cutoff, the other, a block-letter one. If it is a Springfield and not a Remington, don't use one with an R stamp on it.
Try Springfield Sporters. Tell them you do NOT want a Remington cut-off. You should be in the ball park. Good luck.
