Are the elevation slides for Lyman 48 sights interchangeable? In other words, I have a Lyman 48 with an elevation scale on my Remington 1903 that goes to 60. If I wanted one that went to 125, would any "125 scale" work-say one from a Lyman 48 for a Remington 30 or a Lyman 48M?

Interesting question.
I have 125 pt, 48C and 60 pt., 48S Lyman sights in my hand. As you know, the slide for both is operated by a spring retained screw jack that turns with the elevation knob. The screw thread of the 48S jack is more fine than the coarse thread of the 48C. So while the slides appear to be the same width, the short answer is they're not interchangeable. I think it would be much better to change-out your sight, base and all, for the one you want. The spacing for the attachment screws is the same for both.

It depends. You might have noticed that the slide and base are both match numbered to help keep a set together. I have found some examples with mis-matched slides and bases. The above is correct. Additionally, some bases require that the stock be notched. One set I found had an extra long screw jack that required drilling a vertical hole under the base to accommodate the screw - I believe it was a mis-matched set.

If I mount the Lyman 17XNB and end up needing a longer scale sight, it sounds like I better figure on getting the whole unit, instead of trying to change the elevation slide.
Hopefully, the mounting screw pattern is the same.
All Lyman 48 slides and bases are numbered. They are apparently hand fitted and a slide may interchange, but probably will be loose or will not fit at all.
