Barrel wear gauged with 30-06 round

If you put a 30-06 ball cartridge in the end of your barrel, depending on how much of the bullet is showing will tell approximate muzzle wear. Ideal is 3/16" or better of the bullet showing between the casing and the end of the barrel.

Quick question does all "30-06 ball" have the same bullet "shape"?
The way I was always taught, and the way they explain it at the south store, is you must use "ball M2" cartridge because of the shape and olgive of the bullet.
This may all be wrong, someone else can chime in here. please

Correct, it should be a GI m2 ball round, not a commercial. On Ball M2, it is approximately 1ME per1/16". 1/16" showing is a 3, 2/16 (1/8") is about 2 ME, 3/16 showing is about a 1 ME, 4/16 (1/4") is about a 0. This info was from a CMP sticky awhile back.

Thanks I have 1/16" showing.....Charlie
About a 3 ME. I have had carbines with a 3 ME. Still capable of decent shooting. You can have it counter bored, also, to improve group. I would hang it as per CMP instructions and try it. You may be surprised.
There is also a gauge you can buy.
