I collect garands but know nothing about carbines. if i go cmp ($479) which one is better(for shooting first and just to own one secondly) underwood or u s postal meter.
I also might use it for home defense as my garand is getting heavy as i get old. thanx
Good choice as a house PDW. Here is an interesting read on the effectiveness of soft point bullets from an M1 carbine. I have heard Postal Meter ones are the but, but I have had several Underwoods, and they were great, too.

The one in the best over all condition. If the same, NPM made about 130,000 less then Underwood.

Ruth states the opinion that NPM was the best followed by Underwood, then Quality. This was based on a number of things. NPM was the only company to survive the "rain test" which stopped every other carbine. This could have something to do with overall finish. I have a NPM and an original Winchester in very good condition. The NPM is much better finished than the Win. The major NPM parts are the receiver, IBM barrel and trigger housing. After reading about Quality and their engineering and manufacturing prowess, I'm interested in seeing one of theirs. As far as utility, they are all good.
If you decide on the CMP I would spend the extra $100 and get a Bavaria Rural Police (BRP) Carbine. It's still a rack grade but chances are you will get a better carbine with a possibility of some early features. I've seen the NPM & Underwood first hand at the store and they are rough. BRP is the way to go.
I just have a thing for the NPM carbines. The Underwood was my very first but the NPM looks so good!

dr342, u said bravarian worth the xtra 100$. are they all different makers at cmp(original contractors)or are these something different? do I have a better chance of getting a wider range of brands ie. inland,win,quality ect..
