Unexpected Purchase

I recently purchased a Winchester P-14 and No4 Mk2 (UF), so when I went to the gun show today, I only planned on looking. However, that all changed when I came across the first No4 of the show. It was the first one from this manufacturer that I have seen at a show and I knew I wanted it. I put it down and continued to walk the show, but I kept looking back to make sure the rifle was still there. I got nervous a couple of times when I saw a guy looking at it for a very long time. I rushed through the rest of the show and went back to the rifle. I asked the seller to give me his rock bottom price and he came off the asking price by $75.00, at which point I told him he had a deal.

This may be a repeat for those of you that visit various sites, but it has been mentioned that this rifle was not manufactured by POF, but that it was manufactured elsewhere and refurbished by POF in '52 (original markings scrubbed and restamped as a POF MkI).

Any thoughts and/or opinions?

Some were, but Pakistan did get a complete set of machinery for making No. 4s, so did make their own.

Does anyone know which Number 4 machinery this was.... or did they just put a set together on their own, so to speak?

As far as I know, it was BSA machinery. I heard a long story with it, but basically the unused No4 BSA machinery had to be maintained by BSA for a period, and was then sold to them after the maintainence period expired(might be the wrong term"maintenance period").

The Pakistani Ordnance Factory at Wah Cantt received the machinery from ROF Fazakerley in the UK and the necessary tools and gauges to produce the No.4 rifle. Some evidence exists that POF may have produced some No.4MkI rifles, but the very great majority seem to have been No.4 Mk2 rifles. Some reports exist that some of the BSA-Shirley tooling also went to Pakistan, which could explain the MkI components.

The informtion that I have read from various posts and from Skennerton's Lee-Enfield is that in the early 1950's, the Pakistan Ordnance Factory (POF) at Wah Cantt acquired tooling and machinery from BSA Shirley in which they made and refurbished MkI rifles. In the mid 1950's, after production of the Mk2 rifle was complete, the Fazakerley plant was acquired by POF and production of the Mk2 began.
