The wood on my SA stock has two repairs on either side of where the trigger group fits into the bottom of the stock - these are approx. 1/4" thick and run the length of the opening for the rectangular part of the bottom of the trigger housing. The repair is very well done and you can barely see that it is a repair. Is this "modification" legal? Thanks!

It sure is legal. Most of the return guns have wood repairs, even some of the USA rebuilds have the brass pins in them.
I'd check the event rules but if I understand what you are saying correctly - repair with where the flats of the trigger group rest and press into the stock - I would say it is not JCG match legal. I seem to remember seeing that "shims" on the stock were not JCG legal. But I have never shot a JCG match either. Hopefully someone with more experience will respond.

I take that to mean not even little wood repairs in the area the OP seems to be asking about.
I appreciate the reply and the rules website. I don't think of these things as shims - which have a definition along the lines of "a thin wedge of material (wood or metal or stone) for driving into crevices" or "a shim is a thin and often tapered or wedged piece of material, used to fill small gaps or spaces between objects" or "a thin, often tapered piece of material used as a leveler or filler between such materials as wood, stone, and metal" etc. The area of repair on my stock is basically gluing in wood of the same size and shape as the edge areas where wood has been broken. Ben's suggestion of contacting CMP might be the best way to go. I have another question with them already about a faux-M1D sniper.

I don't know what matches you are talking about but we shoot at the Garand fun Match at Camp Perry every year during the Nationals and I have never heard of a Garand being rejected for a stock issue. People shoot National Match Garands, which have full bedded stocks, custom after market stocks, and you name it. The first few years they rejected guns thet had NM Opp rods but they dropped that because the Govt. used them to rebuild guns and CMP sold the Danish returns which tended to have a lot of them. Early on they would tear them down if something seemed wrong, but lately they only weigh the trigger pull since there are so many shooters. Nit picking a original stock with a rebuild cartouch on it would be a rare thing.
The use of shims will get you DQ'd. People do not shoot NM Garands. They are not "as issue" rifles. Should you decide to enter a NM Garand you are not allowed to win a match. In other words, you shoot for "fun" only. I have not seen many (any) NM Garands. I have seen NM '03's, but that is another story. I was at Perry a few years back when a guy tried to enter a Berreta Garand. Not allowed, as it must be as issue USGI Garand.
What about a so-called Danish Garand - Springfield with a VAR barrel?
