Swedish Mauser reloads key-holing!?
:sos:What Gives?
I love my super accurate 1909 swedish mauser and have been shooting 120 grain match kings over 35.5 grains of Varget, or for reduced loads, I've been shooting the match kings over 13.5 grains of Trail Boss. Both work quite well and are very accurate.
Recently, I picked up some 150 grain Lyman cast lead gas checked bullets, and tried loading them over Trail Boss. These bullets look like little torpedoes. Also, it looked like I needed to seat the bullets deeper, but I didn't feel like it was safe to go under 3.00" loa. I'll try to show a pic tomorrow. Well, every round key-holed and flew wherever it wanted to. My reloading experience is limited so I thought I'd ask you guys what's up. :surrender:
Other suggested loads for the 150 gr cast bullets? And what about seating depth?
Greetings to everyone:)
Cartridge and Bullet Pics!
Thanks for the suggestions guys!
Not sure about the Trail Boss though. I've used it with my 1932 Russian Mosin Nagant to produce excellent accuracy under Beartooth cast bullets. I was hoping for similar results with my Swede.
I'm still curious about the LOA. I'm seating the bullets so that LOA is around 3.00 . Here's a few pics.

I pulled out my Lyman Cast Bullet Handbooks and they show several reduced loads, such as 7 - 9.5 gns. of Red Dot with their 143 gn cast bullet, with a LOA of just 2.825. I understand your suggestions so far, but couldn't there be a problem with seating depth as well causing the key-holing? Or am I way off base?
All thoughts appreciated:dancingbanana:
