Is it a lightweight .303" aircraft Browning - if it indeed a .303? It's not the normal RAF aircraft machine gun type as we're in the middle of restoring one from a crashed bomber
Thanks Peter.
Does the one you're restoring from the crashed bomber have a barrel like this?
That's the barrel I would have said was for an Inglis aircraft 303. I had one in the small arms school in Gagetown New Brunswick and that's exactly what it looked like. What era's the other one from Peter?
The proof on it looks belgian to me.
Its a FN browning Barrel, The crown ELG is a Belgian (Liege) proof mark, Military Nitro 1968 onwards
The W* indicates the proof master was Wolfs Nicolas 1952 to 1968,
We've got two aircraft Brownings but only one is restorable/fireable and it looks exactly like the one in Vincents picture, but worse, after being recovered in the 70's or so and dumped in oil ever since. But it doesn't have the large diameter muzzle.
The larger cone muzzle is for the flexible mount like the turrett type. the none cone type is the fixed type found in wings (I think thats the correct way around). I have the recoil buffer and the short/non cone muzzle nut of the fixed type BSA .303
Ah! Liege Belgian proof mark. Thanks Brit plumber.
Looks like the cone muzzle flash hider type might have been used on the Mosquito also. http://www.bombercommandmuseum.ca/mosquito.html
