What's the concensus on the Plainfield M1's? Also what does FAT 76 stand for?
Most Plainfields were built in the 60s?, and used USGI surplus parts except receiver. Later I believe they used their own barrels. They tend to be better than Universals, Alpines, and National Ordnance, etc. Iver Johnson bought them out. Go to the sticky at the top of the forum for M1 carbines Incorporated for more info. The FAT 79 is "Fabbrica Armi Terni" Arsenal in Italy that rebuilt and reworked many of the M1 Carbine, 79 probably the year. See this thread:iMPORT STAMPING

I have a really nice, low serial Plainfield I will sell, so I can buy another USGI.
Very low miles on it.

It is known that some Plainfield receivers made it into the Government's stocks, because there have been some of them sold off by CMP. If your carbine was brought in from Italy it would be USGI. If the FAT mark is on the receiver or barrel, that would be the case. If just on the stock, it would suggest that the stock only came from a CMP carbine. Also look for another mark on top of the barrel under the handguard retainer tang - I think it's a star, but the Italy carbines sometimes have an Italian arsenal mark there. Also look for a strange mark on the receiver ring on the left side. This would be an interesting find if USGI.
Rocky,
You should find some info here....

Note that- Plainfield was the successor to Millville Ordnance.

Thanks for the offer Thumper, but I already took the plundge on a low serial # Plainfield myself. Would you mind sharing your #, or is that a no no? I will if you will. Seriously though, I read on an M1 site (H&S M1 Carbine) that the lowest serial # found to date on a Plainfield was a D283. Mine is lower. Is yours?
Rocky and Thumper,
If you could Please take the time and pass along information about your carbine to Jim at.....
