I just got these today. They were needed to complete one of my two "T" chest kits. I have a GS scope in the other one. I thought the tripod would be okay for either telescope. Not sure if the tripod is a cut down longer one or not. Any opinions? Ray

Just wanted to add. Whether or not the legs were originally made short, the shoulder strap harness was originally made for the shorter legs, Ray
T'ain't cut down methinks.
Mind you I've only one example! I expect more informed commentary shortly.
Mt only tripod is a tall one, Aussie WW2 vintage. Seen a few of the short ones... did some looking about but couldn't find anything official to say they existed or didn't exist for that matter. Discussion still open...
Ray, what makes you say the shoulder strap was made for the shorter version? How long is it?
Attachment 16441Attachment 16442Hi Son, here's some some photos you had posted showing the long tripod with the straps. You can see how long the straps are compared to mine. And I think it was on the Great War forum under Scout Regiment telescopes where I also saw the carry harness on the long legged tripod, (I can't seem to be able to log on there now), and it had a much longer carrying strap. As you can see, the overall lenght of the sling was quite a bit longer then the tripod itself when it was folded closed which allowed enough length to fit over the shoulder.
The total length of my straps is only 35" from the bottom of the cup that goes over the top. The canvas shoulder part is only 18".
Not sure how long the total length of the long tripod is when folded, but I'm sure it's quite a bit longer then the total length of my straps are. Ray
Here's a close up of the straps. As you can see the length can only be extended as far as the wide canvas straps meet the loops on the legs and even if the loops were moved further apart, and the canvas stretched out you couldn't slip it over your shoulder as it would be too tight.
When the strap is extended it's full length, not counting the canvas section which is stopped by the loops on the legs, it measures 22-1/2" from the bottom of the top cap to the top of the leather slide. So the longest tripod it would fit on has to be about a total lenght of 20-1/2" long. Which is only 6" longer then the short tripod which is 18-1/2" in total length. Ray
I'll measure mine later and get back to you. My first thought was they looked about the same.
Here's a better copy of the photo you posted where you can click on to enlarge to get a better idea of thedifference in lenghts and especially the canvas section which appears quite longer then 18" of mine, Ray
You've picked it, Ray. The strap on mine is about 34" from leather loop to cap. Your strap doesn't look to have been modified, so I guess this is the best evidence yet that the short tripods were produced that way.
We used short tripods on the mound and the spotters used the long tripods behind the mound to call the score or shot depending on the match
