i also posted this under the Mauser forum, but this affects Arisaka, Carcano, Mannlicher etc shooters as well....this classic freight train elk bullet is being dropped due to lack of demand, which I don't understand as it only drops 2" lower at 300yds compared to a 140gr spitzer.

It really is to bad that the 160RN is being dropped. It works very well in Swede Mausers as well as a few others as described above. I can see a lack of demand though. The last box I picked up was covered in dust and had a $22.95 original price tag on it. The vendor, didn't even cry that he was losing his shirt on it, he was just glad to open up the space. It was the only box he had or I would have cleaned him out at that price.
The 140 grain bullets, work just as well on big game as the 160RN. Even the Swedes finally converted over to the 140gn Spitzer type.
Other than the nostalgia, I don't really think it will be missed much. On the other hand, Hornady is known for running off batches of obsolete stuff. I guess, we'll just have to keep our eyes open. The 160gn RN, has been extremely difficult to find in Canada for a long time. Lots of other weights available though.
I can't think of what rifles that I have which would have used a .264" 160gr RN originally. Maybe my 6.5 Daudeteau? (please excuse the spelling if it's wrong...)
If you do contact Hornady, do please also ask for a 174isgh gr. POINTED or A-MAX flat base 7,65mm/.303" hunting/target bullet!!! No boat tails.
6.5x55 Swedes used them, until they went over to the 140 grain boatail spitzer. So did the norwegian Krags. I might be wrong on this but I think the 6.5x53 in both rimmed and rimless versions loaded them originally as well. The 6.5x51 was loaded with 156 grain round nose bullets and the Finns, later loaded 139 grain spitzers into it.
The 160 grain round nose bullets had their place, back in the day. Karamojo Bell killed a lot of elephants with them, in the 6.5x54 MS, mind you, they were solids.

But then again, the bullets of today was but a wery wet dream for hunters in the '60's.
Bonded bullets and lead free bullets that expand and work great combined with excelent ballistics.
They needed the 160gr for reliable performance we "need" it for romance, but lighter bullets will outperform it and that combined with lighter recoil and better ballistics?
Maybe it's time for a decent burial for a good and loyal "servant"?
i can agree with that, but I still bought 6 boxes today.
O well, all good things eventually come to an end. HOWEVER, as far as i know Norma still offers the 156 gr. Alaska but they're really proud of them.
