Friend sent me an email, there was an M40 sniper rifle on the CMP that sold for $36000.00.
That's it, I'm lost for words. You could have 5 or 6 of them built by Iron Brigade Armory for that much.

It wasn't even USMC! The rifle was property of the USAF. Still, it's a real M40. Probably virtually unused, too...
I guess if you want something...Wow. I think some people really have more money than sense sometimes. I didn't know it was an Air Force rifle.

Makes you wonder if the BUYER knew it wasn't USMC! But that's why it's in such good shape. Apparently the USAF never used most of their allotment. Probably the need passed before they were delivered (early '70s run, IIRC).
From what I've observed on their(CMP) auctions, it's some very well heeled individuals having no idea what things are actually worth. I haven't even attempted to bid on anything there because I couldn't afford it. Air Force stuff seems always to be in good shape. I've heard some say they had the best National Match Garands, even better than the Navy ones.

You could have bought 4 of the McMillan commemoratives for that - and they include a two day training course with each rifle!
It just defies common sense to me. It will probably never get shot either.
