New Chileno M95 arrived.

An M95 Chileno Mauser finally arrived. All matching, metal in great shape, few dings in the wood, great bore.

Alas, no cleaning rod. I notice that this is a DWM. My other M95 is a Lowe.

How common are the DWM's compared to the Lowe's? How does the craftsmanship of the DWM compare to the Lowe?

DWM was founded on Nov. 7 1896 by a merger of Loewe and several other companies. This was a purely commercial change, and would in all probability have had no immediate effect on the factory floor. Machinery, production staff, and inspection criteria (largely determined anyway by the military) would have remained the same.
In other words, DWM may well be more common than Loewe for 1895 models, depending on the actual time during which the contract was running, but there would be absolutely no difference in quality (excellent in any case), there would simply have been a change in the receiver marking etc. from a certain date.

Nice. I just won an auction for a non-matching, 7.62 conversion of a Loewe Chileno M95. But, heck, I got it for $101!
Now, if I can just find a period sling.

Somebody correct me (please) if I am wrong. BUT, the 7.62mm conversions were done with sleeves? I thought this topic has been covered in-depth on this forum. Somebody/Anybody, please weigh-in.

I believe that you are correct..for the M95 Chileno conversions. The short barrel M1912 Chileno 7.62 conversions were done with an 03A3 barrel cut and rechambered for the 7.62 cartridge

There's a photo of a sectioned barrel showing the insert and incomplete solder fill in an older thread. It's farly scary as it will act as a Williams'type chamber insert if the solder lets go. Way more back thrust!

This is what I thought. I own a M1912 Steyr 7.62mm conversion. It has an 03-A3 barrel on it. The Chilian Army must have received a pile of 2 groove barrels and used them in this project. On a nice Steyr 1912 receiver the barrel is a decent shooter. However, I would not personally shoot the M1895 7.62mm conversions. Wall hangers, only.

All we need now is a supply of new 29.13-inch 7x57 barrels, chambered and threaded for the '95 action.

Come to think of it, my Chileno could use one of those: bore looks like a horse-track AFTER the race!
