My thrift store M1821 needs a rear sight and ramrod. Any ideas on where to look? Since the guys at the gun show looked at me weird when I told them it was rare I assume I can pick these items up at any gun shop, pawn shop or 7/11. Next time I go for a pack of gum I'll say
oh and a rear sight and ramrod too. I'm sure Sams has them in a 12 pack.
Dave, there is no reliable source for the RARE items that you want. If you wait a lifetime, you may find one or the other by accident in an out of the way place in Norway but it is doubtful in the extreme. The way I see it is you have two choices:
(1) Be content with owning the rare firearm that you have. Few people ever even get to see one in person, much less own one.
or
(2) Or you can make or have made an exact reproduction of an original. You will need the skill to do it and accurate drawings of the original or the loan of a complete example. My advice? Start with the ramrod, then move up to the rear sight. That one will be a bear. New made accurate reproduction rods for common guns will run anywhere from $45 to $125 each. Well done rear sites are.... expensive.

Specifically their parts or complete set of parts for the 1803/41/51 Danish-Norwegian Jager Rifle:

This may or may not be the same as yours but since it was updated at the same times (1841 and 1851) they may have the same or very similar parts. You will need to contact them and discuss it with them. I will warn you - money up front and a wait from 2 months to 2 years for the parts. They are a good company but can not keep everything that they are capable of making in stock at all times.
gew8805, this may be weird,but I followed your advice and will be calling the rifle shoppe tuesday. I googled m1803-41-51 and the rifle looks exactly like mine down to the last detail. (on Digitalt Museum I think is a danish site) the markings on one, on the barrel in the same spot as mine with the OIR and some other stuff like mine. I'm beginning to think the noose may have tightend and this rifle is a Danish 1803-41-51. check the sight out and see what you think. I did clean up the brass a little and the look is the same as the ones on the site mentioned. this would be good as the parts should fit. This may mean the rifle I have is not as rare as the 1821 but I want to know exactly what I own.

Model 1821s (aks M1816s and M1822s) did not have rear sights, so look no further. Several places sell correct rammers including Lodgewood and S&S firearms. Dixie Gun Works also has one but the qualty is low and price is high. Expect to pay about 35 - 40 dollars for a good repro.
However, if the gun is not complete other wise, I would not invest in a rammer.
The M1822 is not a rare gun. Even in compete, good condition, they will not bring as much as other more common Civil War muskets. They have an excellent history and pedigree however!

Found MUSKET in thrift store.
I received the Ram Rod about 2 months ago, from The Rifle Shoppe (in Oklahoma per one of the members who responded to my original thread "found musket in thrift store") The rear sight and worm (you know the stuff that goes in the compartment on the butt stock) has been delayed but I'm assured they will be here any day now. I did the degrease and bleach and left ram rod in my garage (Florida= humid place) for a couple of days and it looks like it belongs. The rifle is now proudly displayed on my wall over the family T.V. and during commercial interruptions I can just look up and smile. It will come down when the site arrives and go back up when sight is on. Thanks to all who helped me with this project. Glad to hear that it's working out Dave. Getting parts from TRS can take time but they are worth it in the long run.
