Has anyone else noticed...?

Has anyone else noticed that the slide on their carbine will lift out of the receiver if you pull to the right as you retract the slide? I have an old beater carbine I am selling and a potential buyer noticed this occurred and naturally declined the purchase unless I could fix it. I tried swapping out slides and found it still did it. I then checked the other rifle and it also did it. In fact they both did it, with whichever slide. Curious, I now retreated to the gun room and checked out my nice carbines and much to my surprise, they ALL did the same thing?

Is this normal? How do I educate an uneducated buyer who just thinks it is broken? Suggestions? Thoughts? Ideas?

If you can dismount the slide without the tab being aligned with the dismount notch, the slide tab is worn. If you can only do it with the tab aligned with the dismount notch then it is perfectly normal.

To be clear it only happens when the tab on the oprod/slide is aligned with the takedown notch. It only happens when you apply outward pressure as you draw the slide back. I doubt it would occur during normal operation/firing. I had never noticed, but buyer was working the action and fiddling around and I hear "whoops" and then suddenly my carbine is a POS and he is going on about it being worn out and unsafe. Just looking for some verification to what I already suspected...it is perfectly normal. Thanks.

Ask the potential buyer how else would you dismount the slide if it didn't come out when the tab on the slide was aligned with the dismount notch on the receiver.

Brian is right on this. Also, the slide is to be pulled straight back not pulled back and up. It sounds as though there is some wear to the tab. I can make a couple of mine come out too but not without trying.

If the buyer is oblivious to the logic stated above and needs to be shown numbers, Kuhnhausen has dimensions and tolerances for the slide and its environs. For instance, the tab height is .243" - .006" and Kuhnhausen notes the operation is tolerant of some excess clearance.

One look at Kuhnhausen clearly shows the minimum height of the guide rail at the notch is taller than the max height of the slide tab by at least .016". Of course it will come out.

As Brian said, btw, Brian is one of the most knowledgable carbine guys on the forum. I'd like to add that I've had a couple carbines that seemed almost impossible to remove the slide. One was a Rockola. Took me a half hour of wriggling an twisting to finally remove the slide. Then, to my surprise, the slide went back on very easy. Go figure!

Think maybe the potential buyer knew that this was normal operation and was trying to make the seller think he had a POS so he could get it for a steal? Just a thought...hey, not a bad idea!
