ATI or What?
:mad:I recently purchased a Russian SKS from Markdale gunshop. While it was in the safe for a period of two weeks it developed a crack on the forestock which was progressing further down the length of it as days went by. I took the carbine to the shop and the proprietor said to fix it myself! There were no marks on the rifle. No other gun came back this way. I think the crack developed from temperature change. But any way he wouldn't do any thing for me. I find out too, that a Chinese stock won't fit. So, am thinking of purchasing a fiber stock..not folding, and was wondering which one would be the best? While at a gunshow in Orangeville I saw another Russian SKS with the same crack starting at the same place. Left side front. Maybe it was from installing the metal to wood and caused a split to start?

Why don't you try gluing it first. Get a good weatherproof glue, force it in the crack and then clamp it or lacking clamps put it between a couple of heavy objects. The glues today are usually stronger than the wood so it shouldn't crack again.

Hard to imagine a crack caused by temperature change on a Russian/Soviet designed weapon. Something must be amiss. I agree that if you find the cause of the undue stress and sort it, then an epoxy repair sounds feasible. Very odd. Photos possible?

Something Amiss
You are right, something is not right. I'm wondering if it was from installation. No it's not a laminate..wish it was. It was supposed to be. Yes, did the glue thing with air to force into crack. Holding up well. Like I said the gunshow had one with the same crack starting in the same area?

If you still want to replace the stock you can also consider the Tapco T6 stock. It has adjustable LOP and I quite like them.
