On another forum a newbie Enfield owner and first time poster (Bobonuts) asked about his BSA (M47) 1943 No4.
"Is it a Mk1 or a Mk1* ?"
The picture (if you blow it up enough) certainly looks like it has the * and 'scratched' the same as the model number.
Could this be another example of incorrect markings (like the Maltby Mk1*)

The way I see it, it doesn't matter what the scratch mark is or looks like, it definately isn't a * because if it's a BSA, it's a bog standard Mk1
I agree - it is a MK1, but there are well known instances of Maltby Mk1's but marked Mk1* (allegedly there was a batch of 10,000 incorrectly marked)Quote:

I think its just a chatter mark from the end of the engraving by the electro-pencil. You see quite a few such marks on rifles, although they are often quite faint.
Seeing it up close(er), I agree with Thunderbox...it does look like a chatter mark rather than an asterisk.
