Traded for a 1903A3 barreled receiver two years ago. It had been sporterized. It had a 30-06 barrel that needed replacing so I pulled the barrel. I have a Winchester .243 barrel on hand that I could use for a rebarrel. Can the Winchester barrel be re-threaded to work with the receiver?
If you have enough outside diameter, you can thread any bbl to fit. Why not PM Chuckindenver for details . Or just let him do it for you?
hard to say without knowing what Winchester barrel you have,.,anything can be done, but sometimes the end cost doesnt justify the meens so to speak.,
heres an example.
to rethread, will cost close to 75.00 recut the chamber cone face, and cut the extractor cut ,{if you can find someone that can cut square threads} 100.00, then recut the chamber.. 50.00 plus the cost of the reamer, if you dont have one,
so,,,youll be in a used barrel that may or maynot shoot or even work with the action for well over 200.00
and thats not including the time youll be waiting, and waiting and waiting to have someone do the work that may or may not be able to get the job done without destroying the action..
another option.....
buy a new short chambered barrel, from Criterian or ER shaw, it will screw right in the action,. and will still need finish reemed, but will work, and set you back about the same money.
another thing you may want to think about....308. .260 .243 . 257R. are all made for a short action, and may give you feeding issues.
some cal. s iv done.... 6.5-06, 338-06, 25-06, .35W. .30 gibbs, .270W, all are based on the 30-06 or 30-03 case, and nothing will need to be done to the action, railes, or mag box assembly to work.
if your wanting a flat shooter, with lower recoil, 25-06 or 6.5-06 is a great choice....
you can get a new ER Shaw barrel, ready to install for about 185.00. same for a criterian..iv had great range reports from the Criterians...
other then wanting the hands on to do it all yourself, i dont see wanting to buy a blank, and pay someone to do the lathe work.. when you can get then done and ready to go, cheaper.
Thanks Chuck! The Winchester barrel has enough meat but the flat threading I thought might be an issue. I think I'll take one of your suggestions and just go with a E.R. Shaw in 6.5-06. Should be a real shooter.
i built a 6.5-06 on a Remington 700 action, iv taken many Goats, and the largest Elk so far in my life,.
shoots very well, very flat,, like a 25-06 with an additude. 1-9 twist is the best all around twist, you can shoot 100 grainers, as well as the 140,s .

I have a question about the Springfield barrel threads. Aren't the flat threads mentioned, in the above quote, called Acme threads?Quote:

I do not mean to nitpick but "square threads" and Acme threads are not the same. Below is a litle information.
