Trying to complete an old CMP rifle. Lack of knowledge on M82 scopes and Griffin & Howe mounts have stymied me till recently.
Looking at two scope/mount setups. Interesting in opinions on both.
Particularly concerned with the Rubber Eye Pieces on both, and the un-numbered knurled Adjustment Knobs on one of them.
Any other concerns? Opinions?

Different vintage scopes and different suppliers of parts, hence the varying type of number fonts, or lack of markings alltogether, along with varying knurl styles on the scope caps all combine for a wide variety. An "A" prefix on the cap's part number is Wollensak.
So - you are saying both types of Adjustment Caps are correct, and the difference is appropriate for sn# 40,6xx vs sn#42,7xx? Un-numbered Knurled Caps are correct, and not just taken off some commercial Lyman Alaskan?
I have people telling me that "all" Eye Cups should be numbered. You are saying that is wrong?

Caps can be unnunbered, numbered on the top or on the side. Whether Lyman used unnumbered from their commercial scope manufacture is likely or whether private owners replaced lost ones with commercial ones is also possible. Enough M81 and M82 scopes have been recorded showing unnumbered caps to perceive them as original in the same way that the front locking nut, sun shield and main tube aren't always numbered either.Quote:

I'm not crazy about the rubber, it doesn't match the wear on the scope, but I haven't seen enough repro's to say they are. The Parkerized mount, of course, isn't original finish.
My druthers would be scope 40644 on mount 3252088, but since the rings are staked, I'd take the blued mount combo and look for full grooved caps numbered on top. Maybe the seller would swap caps?
FWIW 40644 looks just like 40570 and 40775; 42750 looks like 42365 and 43319, but all the observations I have in that range (13) have the grooved caps with top number as on 40644. Parts numbering is quite varied, and my observations are incomplete on that score because I usually couldn't see all the features from auction photos.
If you are trying to complete a M1C with a 51 or 52 dated barrel a commercial B prefix alaskan would also be correct because commercial alskans were purchased to rebuild Cs for the korean war. M84s were contracted for the Ds however the M84s did not correctly fit the Cs or so I have been told by several experts
