A few modern mods for the M14-type rifle.

These may not appeal to the M14/M1A purist but they do work for me.:)

The rifle is a Norinco M14 with barrel shortened to 18.5" in a USGI fiberglass stock. I couldn't make an ARMS 18 mount work. The receiver must be out of spec. I use the rifle for 3 gun so the mag release and bolt release really come in handy.

I think it's about 35 lbs.

The serrations make it nicer to use, especially with gloves on.

35 pounds! Must be a HEAVY barreled 18" tube. Or is it the depleted uranium slugs stored in the buttstock?

Seriously, I've never weighed it. As it sits, I'd guess somewhere between 9.5 and 11 pounds.

Not too bad then. The Amegaranges/CMP scope mount for the M1weighs a bunch- enough to completely upset the handling of the rifle. That Troy unit looks even more chunky.

With the 18.5" barrel I feel it handles pretty well. Heavy, but still handy.

Does the Amega rail extend far enough back to mount a regular scope?

Nope, the M1 and M14 versions just replace the length of the handguard. Seem to work well from what little I've used one, but the M1 version is off the rifle now. Don't quite remember WHERE it is!

Sounds like that would make a nice Garand rig for 3 gun with an Aimpoint on the rail.
