Can a D-28287-12SA bolt with a S-11 <> heat lot code be correct for a May 1943 rifle? The chart says made up until December 1942.
s-11 is usually associated with 1942 rifles but could be correct for your rifle as earlier bolts are found on later rifles.
In Duff's book it shows a May 1943 M1,1571899,with a D28287-12 S-11<> bolt.
Thanks guys, the Duff reference is solid. Saw a few earlier posts that agree you cannot accurately date a rifle by the heat lot codes.
I agree that one can't accurately date a rifle by the bolt but the S-11 <> was a predominant heat code for your date range. The Duff reference you mention also agrees with several others in the same date range that he lists in his Guam Garand Monographs collection of data sheets. My 1.561xxx has an S-11 <> bolt.
Hope this helps
