I have a mid production Yugo SKS that has what appears to be an oak stock. As oak is not typically used in US gun making, I'm wondering if this is a European wood that just looks like oak. It is very hard like oak, has the same grain and color. It is definitely not birch or walnut.
It could be elm. Elm features quite heavily on Yugo M48 Mauser rifles.
Perhaps Teak? or something of the like, but not really sure...
I've always thought teak to be an Asian wood, not likely to be found on European rifles.

Long advertised as Teak. The same as on my Mitchell import M76 and zastava part kits. Gary
I checked into teak and found some photos. I would also say at this point that it is teak. Thanks for all your help. I never would have guessed that or elm for that matter. I'm not familiar with either.
Not teak at all, although everyone thinks so. It is European elm. Common in Europe.
Elm it is then. Feeling a bit like a tennis ball. Looked into it some more and there are many confirmations that the teak wood is a myth. The photo I looked at that was labeled teak would be elm that was identified incorrectly.
To confirm I looked up images for teak and it does have the same color but not the heavy grain pattern.
