I walked in the house the other day and my wife was watching a cooking show. The guy had a meat grinder and he put the parts in a ziplock bag that was full of uncooked long grain rice . He said that the rice aborbed any mosture preventing rust. i got to thinking would this work with pistols puting them in a ziplock bag full of rice as a cheap way prevent rust while in the safe.

Just oil lightly and wipe. Avoid bare hands if acidic like mine. Save the rice for dinner.

If the rice absorbs the moisture and the rice is lying against the pistol, in the bag, what is to be gained?

RIG, Rust Inhibiting Grease, has been time proven for many years. It has been around for about 50 years but do not know the exact number. It is long been used by many thousands of collectors. I have used it for about 20 years since recommended by a long time elder collector.

It is inexpensive and does not seem to harm wood. Two or three years ago I started to use it on some stocks which had some mildew problems when I bought them. Nothing seemed to stop a recurrance. An owner/operator of another site recommended RIG on the stocks to prevent the mildew from coming back. It has pretty much cured a problem that has existed for many years.

On metal, it lasts for years. I have guns I have not touched in five or ten years and they are fine. Of course one should store the guns in controlled temp and humidity and free from any moisture drawing materials like rice or most cloths.
