Coast Guardsmen line the rails to give a hand to G.I. Joes coming up over the side of a coast guard-manned assualt transport for last-minute invasion maneuvers somewhere off the coast of England. Helmeted and carrying fighting equipment, the American invaders are on their way to practice amphibious landding in preparation for the invasion of Hitler's Fortress Europe. Coast Guardsmen manned these landing craft in the battle drills and in the D-Day assualts.

"Elsie," the boys call the LCIs -- those staunch landing craft that carry them through invasion waters to enemy coasts. "Elsie" wears a barrage balloon in her hair to keep enemy strafing planes from diving too close. Here, a typical group of G.I. Joes wait on the decks of a Coast Guard "Elsie" heading for the shores of France.
