It's a very early 60's Infra Red sight. Known as the IRR sight. They weren't passive so of you shone yours at the enemy and he also had IRR sight, he saw you and shot at you.
Was this sight used in combat? Can it mounted on other weapon?
Used in combat, not actual combat but in CYPRUS, yes. But useless if you were on the move. Fit anything else, not really. But our big Centurions had an even bigger version of it. The trouble was that the Soviet tanks had an even BIGGER version of it!
It's close to out FNC1 IR. PAS 4.

There was obviously a mandate to ensure the ability to use the flip up/iron sights.
In 1961 when these came in to the system, it beat the heck out of the alternative.
