Is part of my rear sight missing?

I just bought a Long Branch, 1942 production #4 Mk I*. Here is the rear sight.

My question is, am I missing the micrometer sight or is this the "simplified" sight?

Your sight is fine. It is a war time expedient designed to speed up production. The sights are interchangeable. The Milled adjustable sight is an easy upgrade and fairly easy to find. I have two No.4's. One has the same sight as yours the other has the milled adjustable. I found another adjustable on E-Bay they seam to run any where from $35 to over $100 depending on the markings. You can also try Numrich Gun Parts or Springfield Sporters. At Numrich look under SMLE.

If you're going to get a micro rear sight be sure it's for the no.4 not the no.5. They look identical at a passing glance. The scale on the no.4 sight will be marked up 1300 yds and the no.5 to 800. I would imagine the graduations are also coarser to compensate for the shorter barrel of the no.5.

That imagination could be mistaken. The shorter sight radius of the No.5 obliges the sight graduations to be finer (closer together) than those on the No.4. As often happens, geometry trumps velocity in this case.

By actual measurement, the distance from the "2" to the "8" index lines is .235" on a No.5 Mk.1 and .275" on a No.4 Mk.2, both of postwar Fazakerley manufacture.

I'm going to leave the sight the way it is.

Nice original rilfe. You might want to ensure you have the correct bolt head for the No4 MkI* that has the bevelled front and rear edges on the bolthead guide. It looks like you the unbevelled kind that was used on the standard No4 with bolt head release via the catch. The kind you appear to have is known to sometimes 'jump' up enough on opening or closing the bolt to hit the edges of the bolt head release slot and damage the edges of the bolt head guide.
