Stuck ol M1. Need help with a Garand thats not been taken apart much.

I got a Garand from a guy at the show yesterday that needed some cash. Now he cleaned the cosmolen off and all but im trying to take it apart to clean and oil it for storage. I fought and yelled at it and I finally got the stock off without hurting the wood or scratching it, now the gas screw came off ok but I cant get the gas cylinder off the rifle to save my life. The old rifle is fighting me every way. I used a block of wood and a hammer to tap at it to loosten it up but that didnt work. I dont want to hurt the park on the rifle or the finish on the cylinder to do this.

There's a sticky on this here in the M1 section. You're doing it right just tap harder with the wood. You did remove the gas cylinder lock after the screw right? If it's a grunt rifle, it can't be that bad.

I don't know if the sticky section covers it, but check and see if you have a saw cut gas cylinder. There would be a straight or transverse cut under the front sight to ID it. If you do, loosen the front sight screw and you should be able to take it off then. The sight screw provides torque on the barrel and you could pound on it all day without coming off.

John , you nailed it. Its a cut type. I got it off. Still took a little love with the wood and hammer but came off great.
