SMLE bedding problem
With all the chat on here about No.1 Mk5s recently I took mine to the range yesterday for the first time. I was only shooting at 50 yards but the rifle was still stringing over maybe 2 -3inches over 10 shots. Before the howls of "Horrible shooting" arrive there was no horizontal difference between shots, just a nice vertical line which stopped after about 20 rounds. Maybe my eyes took a wee while to adjust as Id just been shooting a No.Mk3 with open sights, but also maybe there is some contact with the wood and heat is effecting how the wood bears on the barrel or action such that as it got hotter it fired slightly higher. Is the action bedding on a No.1 Mk the same as a No.1 mk3. Is there anything obvious I should look for if I take it apart?

Try just putting some RLO to it and spiffing it up a bit as I never had it apart. You can paint the barrel with inletting black which is available at Brownells to check for high spots bearing where they shouldn't but I doubt it's the problem.

Will do Brian. She got many admiring looks at the range and I should add that once the stringing stopped was nicely accurate. I'll take her out one more time before doing anything to see if it happens again from cold.
