I have an IBM M1 carbine, receiver #3665xxx with an IBM barrel marked IBM Corp 8-43.
I was cleaning around the gas piston and noticed a small heart shaped proof mark directly under and in front of the piston. I never saw that before and can't find an example in the limited carbine library I have.
Can anyone shed light on this mark?

Is the mark on the barrel flat near the piston?
I'm looking over IBM barrels and carbines on GB looking for a familiar marking.
BTW,
While doing so I ran across this auction by George showing a humped IBM barrel.
He states in the description that...
"This barrel looks rough on the out side and bright and shinny on the inside. Good for a shooter or wall hanger "
All the while it's eating a CMP guage. I'll bet it's a smooth bore with no grooves!
Weird thing is the barrel is the same diameter from the muzzle back.
You gotta look at this one.... (I put the link in twice because sometimes it doesn't work otherwise)

I'll continue to look for a marking like yours, But thought you had to see this one :yikes:

That barrel has more bulges than a fat lady.

Here's a photo of the mark. Sorry for the poor quality.
Just a wild guess here, but maybe it's the signature mark of the barrel maker who made this one.

Until now, I don't recall seeing either marking before.
Your barrel dated 8-43. The one in the GB auction dated 9-43.

Here is just a "shot in the Dark". Might it have anything to do with the Fredrick and Hart Machince Company that was also located in Poughkeepsie NY during WWII? They made the Underwood slide with the similar "heart" mark, also the M1D flash hider? Hart was head of Munitions Manufacturing Corp. that IBM moved in and took over at the Poughkeepsie plant site.
See here from the Poughkeepsie Newspaper dated October 6 1944....
"Hart Served IBM "
"The decision of the IBM to establish a branch plant in Poughkeepsie was linked with the service to the company of Frederick H. M. Hart of Frederick Hart and Company, inc. of this city. Mr. Hart, over a long period had served the IBM as a consulting engineer. He headed the Munitions Manufacturing corporation, which was a subsidiary of IBM, which was organized March 1941, to establish the South road munitions industry. All stock of the original subsidiary firm was later purchased by IBM and the former subsidiary was dissolved.
Present corporate officials of the IBM are Mr. Watson, president; Frederick W. Nichol, vice president and general manager; Charles A. Kirk, vice president in charge of manufacturing; Roy Stephens, vice president; Louis H. LaMotte, vice president; Ruth Leach, vice president; John G. Phillips, secretary-treasurer; Albert L. Well it could also just be an inspector's stamp too....
