Contemplating the purchase of a 4.9 mil Inland with 2-44 barrel date, UI marked type 1 band and swivel, PB safety, 2A mag catch, low wood CC stock, 5 oclock slide and flat bolt. Carbine appears unmessed with except it has a IR Co (no #) stamped sight on it.
How many of you have observed 4.9's with original adj sights?

I think it may be too early for the type III sight that is on it.
All the ones I have seen with an adj. rear sight had a type 2.
Kind of a gray area about the adjustable sight on a 4.9. My 4.927 has the Type II milled sight, HI (Hemphill for Inland), but it's also a rebuild. On the other hand, the HI sight was only used at Inland during production, and that for only a short time until the stamped sight came out. As the others have posted, there are other 4.9s with milled HI sights, so evidently they were beginning to be used before 5.0 which is usually considered the accepted start. I feel pretty safe in saying a stamped sight of any manufacture could not be original on a 4.9 Inland. Inland used the H in a shield (Hemphill) and IRCO stamped sights later in the 5.0+ range. Your carbine may have escaped the rebuild program but I would say the IRCO sight may have been installed sometime before the carbine left the custody of the government.
Carbine club newsletter says "it appears that the earliest use of adjustable rear sights was around serial 5012xxx. This is in newsletter 361.
Not about the sight, but is the sling on that carbine unusually long? The C-tips actually overlap when adjusted up tight. I've got one like that and it's within the specified lengths I've seen listed, but have been worried that it's kind of an "oddball." - Bob
