Optics Import/Export question

Hi All,

A couple quick (and hopefully straightforward) questions from someone living in the USA.

Import:

I would love to get an L1 series night vision scope (the one that looks like a US AN/PVS-2). What are the rules on importing them to the US from the UK?

Export:

I have a mate up in Canada who would like a fixed (IIRC) 4-power periscope-type sight made in the early 1940s that I have access to. Can I just ship it to him or do I need an export permit?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

I can't help with the night vision scope, don't know anything about them. The other item should be easy enough. I once bought a camera from a dealer in Sweden. Paid him for it and he shipped it to me. It DID have to sit in a customs warehouse in Miami,FL for a month before they got around to checking it. I can't imagine a telescope would be any different from a camera as far as optics go.

You should be able to find out from your (or his) local post office if any restrictions might apply.

I know getting firearm parts in or out of Canada is very difficult nowdays, and the night vision scope might be considered "military" and be hard to import/export.

He should check with Questar International Ltd. - Advertising Yellow Pages who do importing into Canada and should be able to tell him whether this can be done or not.
