Could a Mark I stock feature a (finely) checkered buttplate and be correct as original?
I've seen one online and wasn't sure if it had been changed. If it is correct, it looks like it would be a nice stock for a high numbered Mark I, IMHO.

As far as I know (not far), checkered BP's started being used in 1910. During WWI, BP's went back to smooth to save manufacture time, etc., then checkering started again afterward. It would seem that a checkered BP would be correct for a late Mark I.
Probabaly not. I doubt that the production of checkered butt plates resumed in 1918 since the war ended in November. If the barrel date on the rifle is December 1918, it is possible but not likely. I have two completely original Mk1s, one dated 1918 and the other 1919 and neither has a checkered butt plate.
Btw, the Mark I stock is not mated to it's original bbl'd action.
I don't know what the "norm" is in Canada but, $940 (US) seems WAY high.
