Are these Type 2 Stake marks? Thanks.
They look to be because they are too far under the type 1 sight. Now some manufacturers did use a small round punch to set a type 1 rear sight. And the sight has shifted or was replaced and not pushed over as far as the first original location. Most original type 1 rear sights are to the left of center in the dovetail. Some can be flush with the left side of the dovetail. If someone restores it they tend to center the sight.
Bubba,
This is the SG I have been asking about. If the sight was moved over to the left far enough so that it was at the edge of the stake, it would be left of center about where my Inland type one resides. The inland has small chisel marks though, not round punch marks. That is the confusing part for me. Thanks.

Agree with Bubba-7. That stake mark appears to be for the adjustable sight being applied on the edge of the dovetail. The round punch marks applied originally for flip sights were placed further out and at an angle in order to push metal towards the sight.

The SPD has the flip rear sight about centered. That is more uncommon than common. Usually a flip rear sight is to the left a little or a lot. Either the flip has moved to the right to center it, or it is a restoreation with the sight mistakenly centered, or it is a stake mark for a type 2 rear sight. The size of the round stake is small so it could be for a flip or adjustable rear sight. A large round stake mark is only found with a type 2 or 3 rear sight.
If you can shoot it and the sight needs to be moved left, that would help. I don't know another way to tell. So without that, you would have to assume the stake was for a type 2 or 3 rear sight.
After looking at your pictures again it looks like the corners of the outside chistle marks have been removed when a sight was removed. There is no metal in the dovetail from the outside chistle marks. If the flip rear was original and not removed, there would still be some metal pushed into the dovetail. So it would be a stake mark for a type 2 rear sight.
Yeah, that's what makes the determination so difficult. It is clearly not the original sight, so one has to assume that an adjustable sight was replaced. Sure, there are any number of reasons why the original was replaced with another type 1, but it seems much more logical that there was an adjustable therre at one time. Of course a restoration is a restoration, but there are varying degrees. Thanks!

The stake marks (flattened areas) at the extreme right hand end of the dovetail may be the original Type 1 stake marks. I have an S'G' that is like that and have pictures of a couple others from this forum that are similar - they were smoother though. - Bob

Great picture USGI. You can clearly see how for to the left the flip rear is and the metal in the dovetail from the two chistle marks.
