Maltby No4 Mk1 bolt..
Hi;
I know where there`s a 1943 Maltby No.4 that i would like to buy.
The rifle is in nice shape and is coated in heavy packing grease all over.
However, the last 3 serial #`s on the bolt does not match. The rifle is
head spaced correctly. In light of this, would this be a NO GO purchase or
is it OK as long as the head spacing on the bolt is correct. A very
nice example of a Maltby. ?????? Phil.

I would buy it if the price was right, no worries. But then, I'm not anal about all matching rifles, etc.

Refit the bolt PROPERLY, make sure it gauges up, carefully file out or machine the number OFF the bolt and re-engrave or lightly stamp the correct number. There you go, a perfectly matching rifle and bolt.
Providing it's done correctly, that's just what we did hundreds and hundreds of times. We had a big box of new and part used bolts that had been spun up in a lathe and had the old number spun off
