Loose front sight ?

My front site on my CMP carbine is ever so slightly loose. I can move it (wiggle it ) maybe 1mm. I haven't a clue as to the proper way to tighten it and my Magic 8 ball is in the shop for an oil change. All advice welcome.

With a certer punch on both the muzzle end and receiver end, Punch the keeper a few good licks and the the sides of the sight either side of the keeper.
The other way would be to remove the front sight, flatten the keeper alittle and reinstall the front sight. One way is less work but will show. The other will be more work but not show as much or at all. I have done both.

You could replace the sight cross pin, but the sight band should be tight on the barrel. If you're planning on shooting it, you should pick up a new sight. First, though, I would take out the cross pin and pull the sight off. This will familiarize you with the three parts involved (indexing pin, cross pin and sight) along with the slot in the barrel for the indexing pin - so the sight goes on straight. It may be possible to tighten it up with a new indexing pin too.

+1 If you slightly deform the top of the square front sight key and the pin notch in it, it should tighten right up.

Yes, darn it. 'Key' is what I was trying to think of :). It's made of malleable steel so it's easy to peen in whatever way you need it to tighten up the sight.

thankx to all for the info. When I can get some quality time on the carbine i'll start tinkering with it. I'm learning this stuff on a trial an error basis, at the Garand shoot this morn I shot my third diff garand I bought at CMP and unlike the first 2 ...NOT SO GOOD shooting bad Left and lots of misses. It was determined that the front site was way off and loose and with tools is now straight and tight. Why isn't the front site on the carbine as easy to adjust?
