I picked up a Savage no.4 mk.1* today and during clean up I found it has no English proof marks at all, military or commercial. It does have a few LB parts, triggergard, magazine and bolt ( both serialized to the rifle) but no Canadian marks either. Rest of the parts are Savage and it still has it's original finish, I'll call it blued since I can't remember the correct term ATM. It does have import marks so it went somewhere outside the U.S., what other countries were these sold/lent/given to?
In addition to England, the Savage made No.4s were sent to Canada, 40,000 were sent to India in 1943 to arm Nationalist Chinese troops in China. Several thousand more were sent to India proper, a few to New Zeland, an if memory serves a number went to Russia. I think some were also sent to Malaya. I have also seen a couple that were South African marked and another that was Indonesian marked. I don't know where all they were sent, but they ended up were ever British and Commonwealth forces went and then some.
Here's a couple of my 1942 Savage MkI*. The wood is birch.

P.S. I replaced the grey butt plate with a brass one and the battle sight with a ladder. And NO I didn't get rid of them - they are in a grease bag just in case they need to go back on. I just love the wood on this one and the bore is a spotless 2-groove.
:red face: Why is this? I have a No 4 Mk 1* that I have been told was made in Maltby England, how do I know for certain where it was made??
Simple........... you tell us what the marks are and we'll tell you where it was made
I have two Savage Mk.1s, not Mk.1*. Both have no proof marks and both are So. African property marked and both are in excellent condition. One has all S marked parts the other has a few non Savage small parts. One has import marks, the other doesn't
