Stock was produced by Curtis & Sons, Leeds whose assigned code was N22 during WWII. I suspect the marking in question is for a factory inspector based in the Midlands hence the "M" in stamp, possibly BSA. Is your rifle BSA made?
Hope that helps.
The only parts 'proofed' are the presure parts (barrel, Bolt head, bolt, and action) wood is not proofed but it will be inspected so I would suspect it is an inspectors marking.
Yes inspectors marking, not firing proof, its BSA Shirley..must be their inspector. Ive noted the buttstock was made by Curtis, and the forestock and hand guards by Sykes..These parts were replaced by H&H, or BSA subbed wood?
It won't be a BSA mark but the mark of a Ministry of Supply 'travelling inspector' who whould tour an area to (probably) batch inspect sub contractors work. H&H didn't change ANYTHING. Briefly, the rifle went in, it had pads fitted, bracket mated to the rifle and pads, was bore sighted and it came out again. Read the post regarding the Savage less telescope rifle to see what H&H did
Thankyou for the clarification Peter..so BSA only made the barreled action, subbing out to Curtis and Sykes for the wood, amongst others? H&H did install the cheek rest on the stock though. Im not talking about scope mounts, I know thats H&H, I was concerned with wood.
I saw the Savage post, and thought it may have only dealt with foreign made weapons.
