WWI Navy Luger

To me the rear sight of the WWI Navy Luger sets it apart from the other military Lugers. It is unbelievable the amount of time and precision that went into building the sight so that the pistol would have a 200 meter sight setting. Press the button on the right side of the sight, and the sight pulls back and up to give a 200 meter elevation setting.

All in all, a scarce gun. I don't remember ever seeing one in my travels.

Yes, the Navy Luger is one that will cost you even more than the artillery version! Very solid 4-figures in all-matching non-refinished condition. And Johnny Peppers seems to have a beauty!

I have a minty Luger with a 6 linch barrel that was called a "navy" when I bought it about 9 years ago. All numbers match including all 3 magazines, stock cleaning equipt. the only problem I have is that it does not have an adjustible rear sight. This I understand is the signiture of a Navy Luger so what the hell do I have. I know there were some modified 08s to look like Navys but this sucker looks too damn good and has no file or other indications that would be required to fake it. If it is a fake I wil still keep it as it is the best shooting Luger I have ever seen. It fits my hand so well that I hardly have to sight it to hit in the black out to 25 yards. But I would like to know what the story is.

If it doesn't have the same configuration as the Navy Luger shown above, it is something else. Commercial replacement barrels for Lugers were made in a variety of lengths.

Well then, it appears I have been stuck with a fake. Oh well I'll shoot it for a while and to prevent some other schlmiel from being stuck with it I'll drop it down an old well on the land I have out north west of town.

Not to worry ... a large number of "Navy" Lugers are fakes. The rear sights are readily available as are barrels and so they´re not difficult to make. Even the M (Marine) stamps are available by mail order here in Germany. At the prices they fetch, it seems to be a worthwhile occupation for many a gunsmith on both sides of the Atlantic.

How much you should worry about it depends on how much you paid.
