long range .50BMG shot
I recently overheard a discussion between two guys and one claimed he shot a coyote at a range of over fourteen hundred meters with his single shot .50 cal. BMG rifle. I am old and cannot see that far. Forty four years ago in advanced infantry training we fired the Browning .50 on the (I think) 25 metre range at minuature targets. We were told then that you could scope this weapon and use it for sniper duty. So, I guess anything is possible. At that range what would be the apogee of the round? What kind of range finder would you use at that distance? I don't doubt the guy's claim, but I can't see ..... well, it's like the hole in one, or perhaps the lottery.

I believe the record is held by a sniper from Canada that had a confirmed kill at over 1.5 miles using the 50 cal BMG. It is on Youtube titled Longest sniper kill ever.

Yes the Canadian sniper does currently hold the record BUT he was using a purpose made sniper rifle that probably cost $10,000 and it took him several shots to get on target. Carlos Hathcock made a 2500 yard shot in Vietnam on a moving target(a young viet cong pushing a bicycle laden with arms and ammunition) with an M2 .50 machine gun he had mounted the 10x Unertl scope from his Win. M70 on. He fired 2 shots and both hit the target. He fired at the bike first in the attempt to make the VC drop it and run but when he did'nt and picked up a rifle Hathcock's 2nd round put him down for good. He also made a 1200 yd shot with the M70 on a female VC collaborator hiding behind a haybale, The bullet passed through the bale and lodged in the woman's neck where it was later recovered after her capture. 1400 meters is well within the .50's range but a coyote is an awful small target and they never seem to hold still for very long at a time.

Canadian snipers in Afghanistan are using MacMillan .50s and I know that they also have a few PGW .50s, made in Winnipeg by Prairie Gun Works. You can buy them at gun shows or at your local dealer.
Nice rifles, just cost half a mint to feed.
Somebody please corect me if I'm wrong.
