well whats your guess?

I will be receiving the rifle shown in the photo below in a week or two.

The kid I am buying it from decided that rather then try to answer the 20 questions I wanted him to answer before I sent him any money it would just be easier to throw it in on a trade I am making for a Winchester 1906 pump .22 he has. COOL I like free things.

All he knows is that its a Mauser action and was found in an attic with 4 other very normal looking stock military Mauser's. No idea of chamber/caliber if the bolt has been headspaced nothing. All info I have on it except that the barrel is approx. 1.250" in diameter can be gathered from the photo shown here. Oh he also has all the bottom metal and trigger assembly not show in the photo.

I know squat Mauser's aside from reputations. I would assume from the kids and the kids dads estimate of when the rifles were put in the attic (a house they were working on ownership transfered when the home owner gave the rifles to the kid and his dad) at somewhere in the 60's.

It appears to be some sort of bench rifle project. The kid thought the barrel which is in white could be stainless. Not so sure about that!

Home made Bench target rifle?

Anyone able to tell from the photo exactly what Mauser action that is?

I'm dying to find out what its chambered for. Which of course will make all the difference as to what I end up doing with it. I'm hoping for either one of the traditional varmit calibers or .308/30-06

I won't be getting that stylish stock forgoing the cost of shipping it. Instead once I know what action it is I'll look to one of the aftermarket stock makers for either a varmit, or bench style stock.

Homemade benchrifle? Stainless barrel, most likely.

Looks like a section of 4x4 was grafted onto the original military stock ahead of the magazine....... It appears to be a 98 action with the charger guide ground off.

Excuse me, I know I'm late to the party with this but where is the trigger and trigger guard? I don't see them in the picture.

Would you trust the gunsmithing of whoever made that woodwork?:thdown:

If you read my post you will see I mention that he has it. Meaning it will be included with the barreled action I am getting.

Why do you assume the gunsmithing and the wood working werre done buy the same person? I would assume he took it to a gun smith to have the barrel fit to the receiver and the bolt headspaced. And the wood work was done by the owner.

In any case I will be only getting the barreled action and all metal. I won't be trusting anything about it. It will go to a local gunsmith to have the existing work checked out before I do any work towards a proper stock. I'll cast the chamber and slug the barrel to make sure of what its supposed to be firing. And then based on that I will decide what I'm going to do with it.

I'm hoping it can end up either a bench rifle or a heavy varmit rifle. I might even decide to put the barrel in my lathe and reduce its mass or my milling machine and flute it.

That sounds like the correct thing to do. Hope it turns out OK. And a sound 98 action can last for, well if not ever, long enough for the average user - and his grandchildren!

Well I should be picking this up tomorrow or Saturday. My FFL who I talked to today said they haddn't been to the Post office to check their PO box since almost everything they get in comes via UPS or FED EX. So I might already be in town.
