Does any one know what the correct bedding is for the No8 .22 rifle.
Is the barrel free floating or front bedded like the no4?
The 1961 user hand book states the forened should bear on the wood, but the last two I have seen have free floating barrels.
You're right Simon..... The first EMER's also said that it should bed on the fore-end pretty much as per the No4 but later, when I wasn't looking apparently, it was changed to just bear at the reinforce.
SAome months ago asked the small arms shop at Bxxxxxxxx where they still deal with hundreds of these and they say that if it does bear at the muzzle, that's fine PROVIDING THAT IT IS ACCURATE. But when fitting new, the barrel must float. IT makes sense really because that heavy barrel isn't going to be affected by a muzzle bearing. In fact, I wonder is a muzzle bearing would affect the accuracy
It wasn't until I asked about this that another obvious point arose during the discussion. Withe the No4, it's a simple matter to lever up the flexible barrel from the fore-end with a spring balance to get the lift-off weight but how do you lift a No8 barrel away from the fore-end? I mean........, it just ain't going to flex like a No4 is it? Nor is the pretty substantial fore-end either. I wonder if it was due to these factors that the criteria was lifted.
It goes to show that if you don't keep an eye on the EMER's (or the AESP's as they are now.....) you could lose sight of the ball.

I bought two of them a couple of weeks ago, both from Diferent sources, and just sold one on. Both had free floating barrels.
The one I kept was a Birthday present for my 10 year old son.
