1898 carbine

ready other threads i will answer a few questions that may come up
it has a c on the rear sight
it has a metal plate where the sadle ring should be
the cortuge is 1898 on the side and there is a cortuge behide the trigger guard
the serial number which has a screw whole threw it (who does that) is 440278 i think

That's an odd one. Bad news is there weren't any 1898 carbines made in the serial number range you have. The front sight is not original. The stock however is likely an original 1898 carbine stock, made like the 1896 carbine stock. I think they were the last ones made with the saddle ring as the cavalry went to the carbine scabbard vs the boot that the saddle ring was used for. The three holes for the scope mount are probably spaced for a Williams side mount. Natchez shooters supply still had some in stock last time I looked. The rear sight is a carbine sight, I can tell by the height of the ramp. There will be others come along that can tell you more concerning the stock.

its a fine deer rifle , someone has desecrated all the important bits , but it may be a very fine shooting rifle
