IBM Serial Number line Out Photos ???

I recently purchased this Carbine for $505 shipped. It is an IBM receiver with an Inland barrel. The bolt, slide, stock and handgaurd are also Inland marked. The trigger housing is Underwood marked. The big mystery is the serial number has been lined out. Any guesses why this was done ??? TIA

I thought the name was lined out not the serial number.

True...........That's why this is a strange Carbine. Why was the serial number lined out ?

Just speculating here. But could it be because it failed some sort of inspection and was therefore rejected for service ? Again speculating, but it wouldn't seem so far-fetched to me that someone at some point bought the receiver and attached a parts kit to it.

I would think a rejected receiver would have been melted down for the metal which was in great demand during WWII. Interesting theory though.

Duplicate maybe?

i thought if there were duplicates they were ordered to stamp them with an "X" so they could keep up with production

Two with same serial number made, sent to be scrapped but fell into a lunchbox by mistake and was lost.
Some people or companies can not accept any kind of mistake. Would you tell Ordnance you messed up and go through the BS in having one 'X' gun or just toss it. It would not be worth the trouble. A hundred or thousand yes. Remember, we are talking about IBM.

That is the million dollar question,Only time may tell.Maybe it was meant to be shipped out of the country. Or deep six. anybody`s guess. The mystery carbine
