Comission 88

Hi All;
Is it safe to have a comission 88 rifle converted to a 30.06 cartridge?

Ummm, no.

Yea... Without having any technical data on hand... I have to agree and say no. From what I do know about these rifles, we in the states have a hard enough time keeping people from blowing them up shooting the 8mm for which it is chambered. Shooting standard military loads for 8mm such as Turkish, Yugoslavian, or even later war German ammo (if anyone is so wasteful as to actually SHOOT WWII German 8mm) is certainly NOT recommended even for one converted to accept the 'modern' 8mm cartridge, i.e., the 88/05 and 88/14 models. And God help you if you tried to shoot it in one NOT upgraded... yikes! As for actually converting it to 30.06? That sounds like a bad idea for a couple of reasons. One, at least over here anyway, 30.06 tends to be more expensive and since it is still used to hunting, if one isn't careful, they can end up with some really high pressure stuff. Two, why would you want to convert one of these rifles anyway? It is certainly NOT the best action in the world, either in strength or performance, and I can think of a host of other problems you might run into once you started dealing with the magazine and feeding system. Apart from that, they are becomes rather collectable and it seems like it might be a shame to do so.

Now, if it is one that has already been bubba'd, well I guess it might be an interesting experiment but I would suggest testing it from a distance. But hey, perhaps someone will come along with numbers and a chart and say "actually.... "

So, though it is probably possible I don't recommend it.
