Hey guys, I took my M1 Garand out for the first time today, shot two clip through it and on the third clip the op rod came out of its track, the end near the bolt. I had to take the trigger housing out to unload the thing, etc.
Any idea what is happening?
I was shooting CMP Greek M1 spec ammo.
Would appreciate your thoughts.
Most likely cause is a worn lug at the end of the op rod the rides in the receiver guide groove. Not uncommon. Usual cure is replacing the op rod, but if you're determined to save it, there's a few folk that can repair them. Generally not worth the hassle, as the bolt cam area is often worn as well.
If it's an uncut early op rod, then it might be worth the trouble, otherwise...

I'd be more inclined to go for repair than replacement. It's my impression that a replacement operating rod generally costs lots more than a repair; I could, of course, be mistaken, as I've not done either.

First we should find out if it is a U.S. G.I receiver. Next look at the lug on the op rod to see if it is square or rounded out. Next is to make sure the barrel is index properly. If all of these check out the receiver may be worn out.
I ask if it is G.I. because this is a common problem for the C.A.I. after market receivers.
