Recent gunshop find.
Picked up this nice '42 Savage in sniper config. the other week. She came with a repro scope mount and a Weaver k2.5, but other wise looks well worth what I paid for. Due to the dynamics of what makes an "authentic" Savage sniper, I was wondering if anyone has some comments or feedback. There are no "T" markings, "TR", "S", "S 51" etc. , but I think it falls into the serial # range of the Savages that were converted (somewhere on this forum the # range was mentioned) Anyway...enjoy the pics and please feel free to comment...good or bad.
Thnx,
Ian

Check yours out against this one on Milsurp Knowledge Library. I got mine a while back on GB. It's a beautiful rifle and in exceptional condition.
Congrats on your very nice find.

How many grooves in the barrel? I had Savage almost a T 1942 a while back that had a 6 groove parker hale barrel, nice, it shot good too.

The barrel is a 5-groove.

Hi Ian,
It may well be correct, but the wood has been replaced (butt looks to be beech to me & handguard is a UK replacement). The barrel looks to be a late/end of WW2 UK mfr replacement, but this seems to be a common finding on these rifles. Is there any chance you could get some more detailed pix of the body pads & the surrounding receiver? Also of the inner aspect of the receiver sidewall where the front pad screws are faced off? No worries if you can't.......

I agree with Roger here....... As Armourers, we'd think nothing of replacing woodwork or other parts as required. And we certainly didn'#t rummage around looking for 'the right bits' believe me! Barrels were the same. If the sniper told me that it was inaccurate, I'd take it on the range or fire it from a rest and once confirmed, it'd get a replacement. Once again, I don't ever remember going through a whole rack of barrels looking for a Savage or a BSA or whatever............ The one with the closest underturn and the tightest gauge tolerance got fitted!

I'll post some additional close ups of the pads & rcvr shortly. Did notice that the wood was replacement. Pulled the butt stock, but no serial number present. Some markings on the bottom of the wrist, but thnx to some sanding work by persons previous they are hard to make out. One does look like a re-arsenal star marking.
Thnx for all the feedback.
Regards,
Ian
