Stains

I have bought several bayonets over the past year or so. Also several books. The more I learn the more I realize there is to learn. I wanted to ask is there anything that can be done about minor stains on the blades. I have a couple that have great blades except for a stain or two. I also have a couple that are in not so good shape. I know leaving them as close to their original condition as possible is the most desireable. I have heard 0000 steel wool is ok to use without altering the finish. Right now I am just working on building my collection but want to get as good a specimen as I can find (or afford). Thanks
